April, 2009
Update: One of the long-standing goals of
People First of New Hampshire is to help to close institutions across the
country and world through our national and state self-advocacy networks.
The purpose of the goal is not only to support the closure of all
institutions but to promote and celebrate settings that are inclusive of
family, friends and neighbors within our communities. For this goal, we are producing a film & book which will capture the personal stories of New Hampshire citizens who once lived at Laconia State School. Our film and book will include a reunion of former residents coming together to talk about their lives, then and now as well as sharing of interviews with individuals. We will be showing our film at a local, public venue in early September and then distribute our work throughout the country and world. Our trailer should be coming out soon! Funding needed for our project is estimated to be $8000 for the book & film. We need your financial support. |

Letter to former residents
June 12, 2008 Dear Friends, People First of New Hampshire is holding a summer event on June 26th for former residents of Laconia State School to come together in Concord. The purpose of our event is to reunite and share stories. Following that, our board and members have a goal to prepare the stories for publication and national distribution. We then plan to work with Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered, the national self-advocacy organization, toward the goal to close institutions. There is no doubt that our book, authored by former residents of Laconia State School, will be compelling evidence that institutional living is wrong and that institutions should be closed. We've received several responses from former residents of Laconia who will be attending the event. Visit our website throughout the summer and fall for updates to our Laconia project. If you have questions, or would like further information, please write to: info@peoplefirstofnh.org, with subject line: "Laconia". If you would like the authorization for release form, please use this link to download, print it and mail it to us. Go to Release Form.
Sincerely, Roberta Gallant, Self-Advocacy Consultant Janet Hunt, Executive Coordinator Frank Vinciguerra, President Capitol City Self-Advocacy Group
