People First of New HampshirePledges To Serve Our Communities
April Update: The board of People First has voted to combine the efforts of two of our goals into one. Serving Our Communities is a goal voted on in January during Obama's call to Renew America Together. Members of People First have discussed what it means to be a part of a community and to offer volunteer service. Closing Institutions is a long-term goal first established in the mid-90's to join the national self-advocacy efforts to close the doors of institutions across the country. Members are excited about the idea of creating patchwork quilts together with community members for the sole purpose to present as gifts to individuals throughout the country to welcome them into communities once they leave an institution. A committee has been established to begin the quilt-making project. See previous activities below.

óóóó On Saturday, January 17th, 2009, in honor of President-elect Obama’s rally to our nation to commit to service in our communities on the occasion of his Inauguration, and in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. national day of community service, members of People First of New Hampshire pledged to serve our community. The organization as a whole will embrace community service as a goal: to support individuals to find the opportunities to serve, commit to becoming more engaged citizens and to share their results together. (Board endorsed 1/17/09) “We are one people; We are one nation; and together, we will begin the next chapter in America’s story.” President-Elect Barack Obama óóóó |

Mission Statement of People First of New Hampshire: We believe that people with disabilities should be treated as equals. We should be given the right to make the same decisions, and to have the same choices and responsibilities as anyone else. We should be allowed to make new friends and renew old friendships and be as independent as we are able. We should be able to live where we want to live and work where we want to work. We should also be included in society and not be singled out as being different. We will work to accomplish these ends in New Hampshire. |
