Young Adult Self-Advocates Testify

Several self-advocates, family members, and people who work in the health & human service field addressed state representatives on March 17, 2009 at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. In some cases this was the first time young-adults testified on their own behalf. Their message:   The Governor's budget must include funds to end the waitlist.

Left:  Chrystal Johnson, President of People First of New Hampshire & the Lakes Region Self-Advocacy Group, testifying on behalf of those who are waiting. End the waiting. Richard Johnson, Chrystal's husband, stands behind her.

Right:  Laura Michaelis testifies for first time.

                                                                                                            March 17, 2009
Dear Members of Division III Health & Human Service Committee of House Finance,
My name is Jillian Libby. I live in Penacook. I am twenty years old. I graduated from Merrimack Valley High School in 2007. I'll be done with my transition years through the High School in January of 2010.
I am looking forward to not waiting for services.  I want to have my own herb business.  I hope that you know that we are no different and that we have dreams, too, just like you.
My dreams will be met if I don't have to wait.

Sincerely,
Jillian Libby

About People First of New Hampshire

People First of New Hampshire, the statewide self-advocacy organization started operation in 1992, celebrating it’s ten year anniversary in the spring of 2002. Now, in 2008, there are 14 recognized self-advocacy chapters and a total of 17 groups located throughout our state. People who experience disability are members of local self-advocacy chapters. Each chapter elects two representatives to serve on the board of directors of People First of NH, making this organization the only non-profit in the state that is run completely by people who experience disability.

Purpose Statement

People First of New Hampshire, Inc. is a group of people working together to help each other take charge of our lives. This is being done by learning how to make decisions and choices in life in order to be more independent. It also means learning our rights and responsibilities. We support each other and gain confidence to speak out about what we believe in.

Mission Statement

We believe that people with disabilities should be treated as equals. We should be given the right to make the same decisions, and to have the same choices and responsibilities as anyone else. We should be allowed to make new friends and renew old friendships and be as independent as we are able. We should be able to live where we want to live and work where we want to work. We should also be included in society and not be singled out as being different. We will work to accomplish these ends in New Hampshire.
